5 Midwest Breweries and Taprooms You Need to Check Out

Summer is a time for adventure. Whether you are making a day trip out for a beer and a burger or are willing to adventure cross country for the imperial stout of your dreams – here’s a few breweries scattered in the Midwest that should be on your radar this Summer.

Alter Brewing

Nestled about 20 miles west from Chicago, Alter Brewing co. in Downer’s Grove has been bringing friends together in their taproom since 2015. Their rotating menu is always serving up something exciting and has a myriad of weekly activities like bingo and yoga. We reached out to Alter brewing for an exclusive quote on what makes Alter stick out in a sea of breweries.

“The word ‘Alter’ may be broadly defined as ‘change,’ but one thing that doesn’t change is our pursuit of perfection. Whether it’s in the brewing of a new style of beer, or putting on a fun event in the taproom, we strive to provide an enjoyable experience for every person that steps foot through our doors.” – Pete Kosanovich, Founding Partner Alter Brewing

5 Rabbit Cerveceria

5 Rabbit in Bedford Park,Illinois offers tours of their brewery every Saturday at 3PM and their taproom is open Wednesday – Saturday. Their unique take on ‘cerveza’ draws inspiration from rich Latin American flavors like hibiscus and guava.

New Glarus Brewing Co.

If you are ever driving through New Glarus, Wisconsin it is almost guaranteed that a friend will ask you to, “Pick up a sixer of Spotted Cow.” Their weekly Friday tour is almost always sold out in advance so it does require some pre-planning but their taproom is open for business every day. You won’t find New Glarus outside of Wisconsin, so make sure you don’t miss out on your chance.

Ten Ninety

Brewing started as a hobby for this trio of friends, but before they could even say “Imperial Witbeir” they had a full blown obsession on their hands. They came to call Glenview, Illinois their home in early 2016. Stop by their taproom Wednesday – Sunday to try some exclusive brews only found in house. Hungry? Their rotating roster of food trucks will for sure have something to go with your drink.

As ever, Ten Ninety’s mission is to brew extraordinary small batch beers meant to be thoughtfully enjoyed. Our most popular beers are Angry Dragon (a citra hop pale ale), Half Wit (Belgian witbier brewed with honey, coriander and orange peel), and MPH (imperial porter brewed with cayenne and pomegranate).Simply put, Ten Ninety is Craft Beer Elevated.” – Jamie Hoban, Ten Ninety Brewing

Pig Minds Brewing

In addition to their incredible roster of beers such as the “Death Grip” and “Sweep The Leg,” Pig Minds, just outside of Rockford IL, features an extensive food and bar ‘grub’ menu that is 100% vegan. Even the hungriest of carnivores will find something to sink their teeth into from this menu.

Bonus Brewery!

3 Floyds Brewing Company

3 Floyds Brewing Company has called Munster, Indiana its home since 1996. And although we are sure you have heard of them, we absolutely had to give them a shoutout. They strive to set themselves apart amidst a sea of breweries by using the finest ingredients, time-tested techniques, and an attitude that is unlike any other. They make sure each step in the brewing process is as important as the last and never give anything but the best. A rotating menu accompanies the brewpub with favorites such as the ‘salt baked pork belly sandwich’ or their ‘fried chicken pizza’ leading the pack. Their yearly ‘Darklord Day‘ festival is a mecca for beer fans – and people travel from all over just to get their hands on the legendary imperial stout.
